Halfpipe and Slopestyle
The History: 2012 will be our 21st summer on the Blackcomb Glacier and we have witnessed and helped skiing evolve over those years, with the introduction of the new freestyle disciplines. Mike Douglas, the ‘godfather of newschool freestyle’, instigated this revolution by helping bring back the Solomon twin tip ski in the mid 90’s and then as a coach at Momentum, started our Freeride program back in 1997 to help fuel the grass roots development. Today those fledgling offshoots of traditional Freestyle have now come of age and both Halfpipe and Slopestyle will have Olympic status for the first time in 2014. Momentum Camps continues to be the breeding ground for the youth, but it’s also the training ground for the best in the world, as they continue to push the sport during the summer months, while coaching and inspiring the new stars of tomorrow.
The Coaches: It’s this relationship between the coaches and the campers that makes Momentum so successful. There is no faster way to learn a sport than by copying….the key is who you are copying. Without question we have the greatest line up of talented freeride coaches in the world, and it’s no coincidence that many of these coaches were also once Momentum campers themselves. Coaches like Sarah Burke, TJ Schiller, Mike Riddle, Rory Bushfield, Corey Vanular, Ian Cosco and more (see former campers). It’s almost like a lifecyle here at Momentum – start out as a camper, go make your mark on the world and come back to coach the new generation. By simply being themselves, our coaches instill the belief which made them successful – that everyone can achieve their goals, no matter what level you aspire to.

The Program: The Freeride program is designed to teach you skills in the park and pipe. With the largest summer skiing-only terrain in North America, we have available a progression of jumps and rails to fit all levels of skiers. We also have 2 on-snow airbags, trampolines and a full water ramp facility to help train your aerial skills, as well as using the new Foam Pit facility at the Olympic Training Centre.

Coaching is customized to your level to teach you exactly the skills you want to learn, with one-on-one attention and in depth video review, as well as optional sport psych classes and a special ‘Competitive Program’ for those who want to learn how to perform when it counts most. Your footage from the week is available for download after the camp, along with a souvenir slideshow.
Full Package or Skiing-Only Package: Choose either our all-inclusive ‘Full Package’, which includes everything plus meals, accommodation and airport transfers or our more economical ‘Skiing Only Package’, where you get the full coaching program, but no afternoon and evening activities, food, hotel or transfers. You have the option of adding on the activities package for a full day program.
Team/Competitive Programs: We also offer special Team and Competitive Programs for those wanting to focus on high performance. Club coaches are welcome to ’shadow coach’, to learn from and work with our team to maintain continuity. We also offer a Hybrid program for those who want to mix it up, half Freeride and half Moguls.
The Competitive Programme (CP) is an optional additional part of the afternoon activities aimed at competitive skiers. We offer some additional sessions such as goal setting and review, sports psychology, extra trampoline and talks on fitness or nutrition. We find that it helps campers focus their attention on what they want to get get out of the camp, as well as give them some tools to help them progress as they concentrate more on the competitive side of the sport. There is no extra cost for this program.

We are deeply deeply saddened by the news of Sarah Burke’s tragic death.
Words cannot express what a huge loss this is and how deeply she will be
missed by all her friends around the world. Sarah was instrumental in
starting our Girls Program and has always been a huge advocate to help
promote women in sport.
Girls Week 2012 will be back again this year and we will honour Sarah’s
memory and achievements. This year the session will be hosted by Roz G, Meg Olenick , Dania Assaly, Kirsty Leskinen, Kaya Turski along with World Cup Skiers Kristi Richards, Tami Bradley and Chelsea Henitiuk,
Our coaches will focus their energy on mentoring, inspiring and technical coaching, with the objective of creating the ultimate environment for young women to progress. The extra one-on-one attention, continuity of coaching and a nurturing, supportive environment really helps build confidence and ensures an excellent and fun learning experience.
In addition to the female focussed coaching the week will also include:
• Special ladies only afternoon photo & film sessions on – hill. We will choose a sunny day and stay up late to get some extra great video and still shots of the girls to be used for their own portfolio or simply to keep as a record of the good times at camp.
• Specific skill development and strength activities, including special trampoline sessions, along with targeted dryland activities geared for girls.
• Special ladies-only off-hill activities.
• Special sponsor prizes for ladies only.
